Clawson Cabin | Colter Cabin: Classic Log Cabin w/Privacy & Views

2 Bedroom Cabin in Clawson, Tetonia

Colter Cabin is located on six private acres surrounded by ranches and aspen trees. It's the western log cabin you've been looking for, just north of Driggs, Idaho in the foothills of the Tetons near the Wyoming state line. It's a romantic escape for one couple, but can also accommodate two couples, a small family, or serve as an artist/writer retreat. Honeymooners love the authenticity of the true log construction, big fireplace, and dramatic views. There's fantastic bird watching, hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, and fishing nearby. Or just enjoy the fresh mountain air!
The cabin features high ceilings, classic log construction, a stacked-stone fireplace, and forever views of the neighboring ranch and the Big Hole Mountains. Sip your coffee on the back porch and keep an eye out for moose, fox, and bald eagles. The bright and airy upstairs bedroom sleeps two adults in a queen bed, while the downstairs bedroom features a twin daybed, flatscreen TV, and a sitting area. The central great room offers a fully stocked kitchen, dining area, and a sofa and chairs to relax on after a big day exploring the mountains or floating the Teton River.
Grand Targhee is 25 minutes up the hill for excellent powder skiing in winter, and Jackson Hole is about an hour over the pass. Yellowstone (93 miles) and Grand Teton National Parks (47 miles) are a bit further afield. Enjoy views of Grand Targhee ski area and the Teton range from the front deck while surrounded by nature. You can cross-country ski or snowshoe out the front door or find your way to one of the many groomed trails near the towns of Driggs or Victor. Men's Journal named Driggs, "The best small town in America" in 2001. We think it's still true today!
In summer, there's great kayaking on the Teton and Snake Rivers and mountain biking in the Big Hole Mountains. Fly-fishing is available at Leigh Creek, the Teton River, and other local waterways within a few minutes' drive. Venture 40 miles north to Henry's Fork to try your hand at world-famous fly-fishing spots. Hike into the Jedediah Smith Wilderness to get away from it all or take an easy stroll from the cabin down to beautiful Leigh Creek. Horseback riding and golf are also available within a few minutes' drive. The darling town of Driggs is a 7-mile drive and features cute restaurants and shops. Idaho Falls and Jackson airports are each about 75 minutes away.

Summary: My son and I stayed 7 nights at this wonderful and private cabin flanked by pasture land and a view of the Grand Tetons. The cabin has amazing sunset views from both of the porches (one off of each bedroom). The porches overlook pastures with a dozen horses that graze and play throughout the day. We also saw a few deer on the property during the evenings. There is a family of foxes that lives in a woodpile down the road and come out around dusk. All the modern conveniences (KitchenAid appliances, pots/pans/etc, big TV w/ Apple TV, washer/dryer, and great water pressure - - which is nice after a long day exploring). Very private and down a well-maintained gravel road. It was 28 degrees the first two nights we were there and the big fireplace and ample seasoned wood delivered beautifully. (There's heat, too, but using the fireplace was way more fun!) Parking is simple (large gravel area in front of garage which is in front of the actual cabin) and check-in was a breeze. There are several hiking options in the area including some trails into the west side of the Tetons (trailheads about 15 minute drive from cabin). Grocery, dining, supplies are just a 15 minute drive away in Driggs. Wonderful stay and a great basecamp for Grand Teton adventures. With the Teton Pass out of commission, it was about 2 hours...but the drive is very scenic and the summer days are very long so there is plenty of time to head out to the Tetons in the morning and get back before dark! Wonderful!

Summary: Can't say enough about how peaceful this cabin is. We were able to travel to both Yellowstone and Tetons national Park. The road closure requires some extra drive time but the drive was absolutely beautiful. Both parks are stunning. That being said the best part of our stay was the evening sunsets on the porch at the cabin. The birds songs were the only music we needed along with the sound of the wind blowing through the trees which sounded like the ocean. The sunsets are God's masterpieces each night giving us a glimpse of heaven. I've never seen sunsets like the ones of the cabin before in my life. Another bonus was the bed was incredibly comfortable. The mattress was just perfect for my bad back. The owner could not be more responsive. She was very caring about everything regarding our stay.

Summary: Very nice and secluded cabin with beautiful views. Close enough to local restaurants and grocery stores. Plenty of local places to hike and explore if you don’t feel like making a trip over the mountain pass to access the national parks. The cabin itself was clean, warm, and cozy. Would highly recommend.
